Howard Fogg wrote a diary during his time in the Army Air Corps in 1943-1944. It began in the US during training and progressed until near the time of the completion of his combat flying in the fall of 1944. Although predictably boring in one regard, it’s fascinating in so many ways. Insight into the ordinary of a guy first flying P-47’s and then P-51’s naturally includes the extraordinary. Fogg was not an ace (I don’t remember him getting any kills) but he was a trusted flight leader, good at keeping his element or section in formation, good at bombing and good at strafing. He lost many friends but protected himself for the most part by being matter of fact about the losses. How hard that must have been. The air war unfolds in these pages slowly, punctuated by bad weather, visits to London and painting.Fogg’s an outstanding painter and we’re fortunate that some of his wartime works are included in the book so well put together by his son Richard and Richard’s wife Janet. More than that, at the end of the book, they include a couple dozen paintings from his long career painting locomotives and trains. Most are quite stunning. The book narrative is well illustrated with excellent photographs of his squadron mates. It’s a pleasure to see who he has mentioned in his diary. Also, interspersed with the diary entries and photos are Headquarters 359th Group monthly historical summaries. While they are interesting, they’re not “that” interesting. Probably because I have a fairly good knowledge of the 8th air force’s activities during Fogg’s period flying with them, I found these chapters tedious. For many, I’m certain, they’ll provide worthwhile context to what Fogg and his buddies were doing. All in all, thank you Captain Fogg.

This book represents a labor of love for a family whose father (Howard Fogg), a renowned railroad artist, had served during the Second World War as a fighter pilot with the 359th Fighter Group of the United States Army Air Force (USAAF), which operated out of Britain between 1943 and 1945.The heart of the book is made up of diary entries that Fogg had made between October 1943 (the month that the 359th arrived in Britain) and September 1944, when he completed his combat tour and returned to the United States. The historical commentary, which is interspersed throughout this book, provides a wonderful touch, which gives an added perspective on the contributions and sacrifices made by the USAAF in Europe towards the defeat of the Third Reich. The reader is given entree into the day-to-day existence of a fighter pilot and its sometimes mundane aspects aside from the pressures and hazards of combat flying. The book also has a generous collection of wartime photographs and several examples of Fogg's postwar railroad paintings, which showcase his considerable talent. For me, "FOGG IN THE COCKPIT" was one of the best purchases I made this year. Any student of the Second World War or aviation enthusiast will love this book.

This posthumous diary makes interesting reading, but doesn't provide much context. What struck me as strange is that it doesn't seem like the day to day observations of a fighter pilot. In fact his dangerous missions and constant danger seem almost not worth mentioning. Mr. Fogg was probably too modest a person to brag, even to his diary, but I would have liked more description of the fighting. Also, the morale reports and official squadron diaries somewhat lack context in the bigger picture. A worthwhile effort and worth reading.

This is a very unusual memoir in that it's the entire wartime memoir of Howard Fogg but also interspersed added squadron after action reports, chaplain's reports and highlights of was happening on other fronts of the ETO. In all an interesting personal account juxtaposed with an overall picture of the ETO.

An excellent book for those interested in WWII history from the perspective of a veteran who experienced it firsthand. Initially takes a little getting used to the brief snatches of the "this was today" format of reading someone’s diary as opposed to the continuous narrative of the books we are used to, but it's worth the adjustment. Each day's emotional ups and downs of combat and "living on the edge" are intertwined with the role of the individual fighter pilot in the bigger picture of the teamwork it takes to win a war and preserve the freedoms we enjoy today. Thank you to all who serve.

Good all-around read of the fighter pilot's activity in England during WW2. Sometimes there was too much detail of mundane things, which can be boring but is typical of a dairy. However the action parts were the reading I enjoyed best. Howard Fogg was a good fighter pilot and a great artist.

it read like a diary didn't give any real details on any missions just day in and day out activites

I had a particular interest in reading this, because my father was a pilot in the same 359th Fighter Group as Capt. Fogg. That was my initial reason for choosing to read this, but the book goes way beyond that. The heart of the book is made up of a fighter pilot's diaries, with historical perspective and summary of the 359th's activities at the end of each month. I remember as a child seeing photos of the P-51 Mustangs, including Moose Nose, which was Capt. Fogg's P-51. Wonderful story. Richard Fogg reminds us why his generation was dubbed "greatest" by a well-known TV journalist.
