This book is a work of genius!!! I tried to get into stocks years ago and none of the references for beginners I came across made any sense, so I gave up. I decided to give it another try and some references captured the very basics like "what is a stock?" "why is investing important?" but after that sent me for a loop again. I decided not to give up again and that's what led me to this book. John Roberts simplifies EVERYTHING! He puts in a relative perspective so you can understand it better. Like saying an exchange is basically an auction. He relates something unfamiliar to something familiar so you can grasp it better. It helps a lot to be put this way. And I love that he centers the book solely on stocks. Other references start throwing in bonds and funds when you barely understood stocks to begin with, making you twice as confused. I also love that he reiterates some important points because sometimes I'll forget something and wind up going back and try to read it again, but he brings up the points again to make it easier to stick. And being new to the stock market I need that reminder.Upon reading this book, I was finally able to get a stockbroker account and begin investing with confidence. Something I never thought I could do. I can't wait to read his other books!
John really does simplify things in this book. I’d recommend this to those truly lacking any background in personal finance and investments (the self-proclaimed “non-numbers people†out there - no offense).He doesn’t use any technical buzzwords, which was nice. If I had to summarize it the concepts covered in this book, “quick and dirty.†John wants you to read this and just get started! Trust your natural instincts, apply what you learn, and don’t be stubborn.Read this book in one day.
Granted this is coming from someone who has pretty much 0 experience with stocks. 2 years ago my employer added managing our 401k to my job responsibilities. I was flustered at first because I already administered the pension plan (with over 40,000 participants), but as I got deeper into my new job I saw how some employees had millions of dollars of investments and were retiring rich even in their 50s. These were not one off situations either, but multiple employees that played their hand right.I wanted to learn more about stocks to help my nephew have a better chance at not having to be a slave to an employer for the majority of his life.As I’m close to retirement age, I also wanted additional income without having to take on another job or work weekends as my brother in law had to when he had a business.Stocks seemed confusing and controlled by the old boy Network. Thank goodness I found this book.I like to say explain it to me like I’m six years old. That’s just what the author does and I realize it is not difficult to get into this stock club after all. This is a step by step guide with real stock newsletter recommendations, online stock broker recommendations, links to real sites to get more info on stock recommendations that I’ve heard of. It’s all here! Everything I need to get started. I just bought his other book too about dividends.
I'm a 22 year old kid whose always been interested in the stock market. This book cleared up a lot of questions and made me feel confident in starting to invest. I just started my first broker account today and plan on buying my first stock tomorrow. The book was easy to grasp, interesting and I'm happy with the purchase. Thanks John!
Short (60+ pages) and simple with a touch of humor and a number of online resources. Bought it to help someone just starting out; gives a very basic foundation and he shares a lot of his own personal methods and resources; not at all pushy and does a good job of introducing basic terms in a simple manner, blending them into the topic his is discussing. This book won't take you very far but it is an excellent starting point and not technical.
I was someone who knew NOTHING about investing or the stock market, and this little book is a great intro. It's in plain English, common-sensical, and easy to understand. It prepared me to go on to read more complex material confidently. If you want to buy one book today to get started in understanding all this, this is the book. In fact, I"m checking out John's other books...
I am extremely new to investing my hard earned money, after having it sit into my 401k with my employer, I took Mr. Roberts advice and rolled it over into my (new Ameritrade account I just opened). Now with that being said, I had 30 days to deposit $3,000 into my account in order to buy and sell trades. There was quite a bit of information on the login page and I got really intimidated and scared, AT FIRST, then I took two deep breathes and said to my subconscious, "keep going you got this". Of course I did. Now, to the newsletters he mentions about Oxford, OMG, I was on the site and they running a special to get alot of $99 dollars for the highest subscription which was regularly $249 and you get I believe it was like 4 or 5 bonus materials. I am interested but I think it may be a little to advanced for a beginner like myself. I need to allow myself to get familiar with the "trade" first before any of that material can be of any use to me. Now as far as the book itself by Mr. Roberts, I absolutely loved it and I am so excited to buy my first stock. I am also buying his other books Your Future Paychecks and Raises, and many more. I like how he simplify things for beginners, stock language that I can actually relate to by him using every day terms!!! THIS BOOK IS FOR BEGINNERS AS THE TITLE SAYS, SO IF YOU ARE MORE ADVANCED IN THIS FIELD, THIS BOOK IS NOT FOR YOU BECAUSE YOU ALREADY KNOW THIS INFORMATION
