****UPDATE 4/23/2015: From comments I've received and current reviews, it appears this box set no longer includes the 40th edition Anniversary edition with the Flat Stanley cutout.****This review is to let potential buyers know the contents of this collection, since at the time of my writing the product information does not state which books, or even how many books, are included.This collection includes four books, and you can buy it for the price of just two of the books purchased separately. Here is what I received:Flat Stanley (book #1)Stanley in Space (book #3)Invisible Stanley (book #4)Stanley, Flat Again! (book #6)Plus, the Flat Stanley Collection box, which holds all four books neatly inside.I am docking one star because as you can see this set does not include the books in the chronological order in which they were written. The second book in the series, which is not included, is "Stanley and the Magic Lamp" and the subsequent books do make mention of Stanley's adventures in that book. (I don't miss not having book #5 "Stanley's Christmas Adventure" and don't recall it being mentioned in the other books.)
My son (6) is getting older so I wanted to read chapter books for bedtime stories instead of our standard story books, to give us something to look forward to the next night. He loves the Stanley series. We usually alternate between reading the pages. Some of the language is definitely dated, but he still understands the meaning behind some of the terms. I have to admit I love reading them too. Sometimes we burst into laughter because some of Stanley and Arthur's adventures catch us off guard.
My Kindergartner has been enjoying chapter books for about a year now and while I think Nate the Great is a good intro to chapter books, since I was buying for a 6 yr old I thought the subject matter of Flat Stanley may have been more appealing. The nice thing about both of these series is that if you don't start with the actual "intro" book, they set up the situation in every book. However, if you read Stanley in order it does help because there are mentions of previous adventures from time to time. Being a world traveler myself, I like that it introduces the child to other countries, cultures and famous landmarks. At this point I am reading them to him but looking forward to him being able to read them by himself.
It is well known that kids love Flat Stanley, and it makes a great project for those 2nd and 3rd grade classes to do! Flat Stanley has been flattened... and so he can get mailed or fit under doors and places no man has gone before... and Flat Stanley has some great adventures all over the USA and around the world as a result! Try doing the "Flat Me" experiment with your own child if you home school or don't have the opportunity to in your own school - trace your child onto a long piece of paper and mail him/her with instructions to a relative or friend to take photos with your "Flat Stanley/Flat Me" at various locations, then do a nice photo and writing project when you get "Flat Me" back!This Boxed Set was a great way to introduce a few Flat Stanley stories, but the box easily breaks down if all the books get taken out at once (which is great that your youngsters love the books that much they can't wait), which is the case for any boxed paperback set I suppose. The stories will be passed on then to the next generation of 5- 9 year olds or perhaps to the library. Share these stories!
I have a first grader who is really wanting to read chapter books (like his older brother). I found this to be a nice transition between picture books and chapter books. The readings generally keep him engaged and it's challenging but not overly difficult.
My daughter loves these books shes in second grade and they are awesome chapter books for her age. She is actually reading the first one in class! Totally recommend she was laughing out loud when reading.
Perfect for my 6 years old. He loves the books. I don't need to ask him to read. He pulled out the book every night until he finished the whole set. Now, he occasionally will pull it out and tells me the stories on some pages that he loves a lot.
These books are great! They have gotten my 8 year old son into reading. He is asking for more for Christmas! I always am looking for books my children will enjoy reading. I hit the jackpot with this series!
