I avoided the Pokemon Manga for a long time because I had watched the show. And I REALLY did not like Ash. Or Pikachu.Then at Goodwill I came across a volume called The Best of Red, and bought it on a whim. I ordered this Volume shortly thereafter. To think that something so well done has been waiting for me to discover it. For the first time ever, I read about a Pikachu, and thought he was cool! If only the marketers had kept him true to this original, meaner-looking form!As soon as a new paycheck rolled in, I ordered Volume 2. I am more than happy to display this Manga amongst my extensive collection of everything from K-On to Claymore. A Great Read!
I am a veteran of the pokemon videogames, having played everything from the first generation to the most current release. over the years, Pokemon has been a constant for me, and revisiting the story of the original games via this manga is great. while certainly sticking closer to the game than the anime did, this adaptation is not without error. certain Philemon type matchup just don't make any sense. pikachu seems impervious to rock attacks, and meanwhile literally kills an onix with a lightning attack as an example. if you can look past these things, you will find an entertaining and nostalgic piece of pokemon media.
My 7 year old son loves this book. He is an average reader who has found a love to read with this book!

This book series is amazing!! Anyone who likes the Pokémon series should give it a try. Definitely one of the best manga reads I have had the pleasure of experiencing, Brings back fond old memories of when I was a child living in the hills of Tennessee. I love it every time I go back to the book.
Love the Manga so different from the anime, much more mature for teens and young adults. In my opinion I wouldn't let young children read it because of some of the content, but will recommend it to anyone who has loved pokemon since they were kids and I'm 27 and still love the franchise.

The story is considerably darker, the characters have more personality to them, they stay as close to the original Video Game story as possible, and it's far less repetitive than the Anime. I'm glad that I decided to collect the entire Manga series!
My grandson ordered the book on my Kindle. He was unable to read it because after a few pages it wouldn't turn any pages.
