I read a lot of books on military history, counter-terrorism and Afghanistan but somewhere along the line I missed what is undoubtedly the best special operations memoir and first-hand battle history of the entire Afghan War, "Kill Bin Laden" by Dalton Fury. Probably the reason I missed it was my being distracted by the unpleasant white noise generated around the hunt for Bin Laden by the dozen Navy SEAL memoirs, the occasional CIA "operator" account and worst of all, a novelization of the SEAL Team Six takedown (which stole Dalton Fury's title) that have saturated the market since 9/11. Now that the Green Berets are getting their own Afghanistan war movie (12 Strong) it was about time I read the classic account by a true silent professional -- no, not a Navy SEAL -- I mean a legendary member of the Unit, officially known as Operational Detachment-Delta (OD-D), better known as Delta Force.Dalton Fury is the pen name for Tom Greer, a career soldier who spent his entire adult life as an elite soldier -- Army Ranger enlisted man, Paratrooper officer and Delta Force commander -- culminating in his role as the coalition commander at the Battle of Tora Bora. The first part of the book focuses on Greer's biographical details including his selection and developmental years in Delta Force. Unlike the last dozen SEAL memoirs, Greer/Fury writes a self-effacing, transparent memoir devoid of hyperbole. Greer/Fury wants you to know he is no superman, just a regular soldier who ended up "making his own luck" in the world's most elite combat unit. This was a joy to read, especially since I served in the Army during the same timeframe (We both went to boot camp at Fort Benning in 1983, attended Ranger School and became officers around the same time. So maybe I am a little biased). Then comes his first hand account of Tora Bora.It was December 2001 and the brilliant, three-month US campaign to defeat the Taliban and hunt down the architect of 9/11, Osama Bin Laden, was successfully being waged by an unlikely coalition of US special operators, Afghan warlord militias and USAF strategic bombers. For reasons that remain unclear today, the US national command authority decided to fight the battle to kill Bin Laden with a minimum of US ground forces. Assets were even withdrawn from the theater just as Bin Laden was trapped in a nasty, little corner of Afghanistan bordering Pakistan called the Spīn Ghar mountain range. Greer/Fury achieved impressive results with his unlikely coalition. But along the way he was frustrated by the unwillingness of the higher ups to put more boots on the ground. The Special Forces A-Teams assigned to help were held back by their commander (a colonel who is the hero of 12 Strong but a zero at Tora Bora) who didn't want to risk them against the overwhelming odds faced by the Delta men. A request for a blocking force of Rangers to plug the escape routes into Pakistan was also denied. Greer/Fury, his troop of operators and their coalition Afghan militiamen pressed on. At one point they even have radio intercepts of Bin Laden trying to rally his mujahideen as Air Force bombs rain in all around them. By the end of the battle, Greer's forces conquered the cave complex at Tora Bora but Bin Laden was gone -- escaped into Pakistan. The end of the book details Greer's final years in the Army including a brief stint as an active duty advisor to a National Guard unit. But he managed to return to Delta for his last deployment before retiring. Greer/Fury's post-Army career was spent as an author (both fiction and non-fiction) and security consultant. He became a Christian due to the diligent witness of his brother, an Army Sergeant Major, and, sadly, succumbed to pancreatic cancer in October 2016. All who knew him describe him as the consummate warrior and professional. I recommend this book along with Sean Naylor's "Not a Good Day to Die" as among the best books you will read on the early years of the war in Afghanistan. Highly, highly recommended.

Dalton was the real deal. He was the right man in the right place at the right time - in a critical time- and he tells his and his unit's breathtaking story behind enemy lines in a straightforward no BS manner. Honestly, the only thing that is disappointing is how the government at the time and top brass completely pissed on the opportunity Dalton and his team presented them. And now that sadly, Dalton (Maj. Tom Greer) is gone from this Earth, his men and his legacy deserve the truth, the real deal. RIP Ranger Tom

Now that UBL is no more and with 20/20 hindsight, we know the fake 2 day truce forced on Delta by a corrupt warlord was the chance for UBL to exit to Pakistan. The reviewers that think the "Rogue Warrior" series is a better read should learn the difference between fiction and non-fiction. Readers have to remember that books like this have to be checked by DoD, so a lot of operational details were likely omitted.Fury ( a pseudonym) wrote the book to straighten out all the misinformation. As for Fury's criticism of the higher-ups, they have to think about global issues such as relations with Pakistan, a nuclear power. The Pentagon's decision to use indigenous warlords was the mistake, not Delta operations. It is clear, that left unhindered, Delta would have been successful.

This is a fantastic book by a fantastic warrior. Anyone wishing to see what the beginning stages of the war in Afghanistan looked like would do well to read this book. Furthermore, the mere fact the US has nearly forgotten that Tora Bora was where the Russians failed for 10 years and it took US & British Special Operators just a few days, tells of the professionalism and dedication these warriors have to winning in an uncertain world.

Personally, I view Dalton Fury's account of "Kill Bin Laden" to be the most accurate information on what happened in Tora Bora. I agree with him...bin Laden may have chickened out from the fight, but AQ was defeated.I appreciate the detail that was given of the battle as it was waged. Some might call it 'boring', but I thought it gave credibility to his explanations. And I found that it was a book that was easy to understand. I am a civilian...and a woman...and I didn't have to be a Military Scholar to get through this.It was just really nice to read the truth, rather than listening to the misinformation from MSM.On a personal note to Commander Fury...I thank God for you, and our Special Mission Units. I thank you, and your wife and daughters, for the work that you have done to ensure my freedom...and of our nation. You would all be welcome in my home, for coffee, anytime!!!!!BTW...you are a really good writer! Now, on to your fictional work!

Conventional history says Osama Bin Laden escaped the U.S. manhunt during the invasion of Afghanistan. This book goes behind the scenes and provides amazing details about how Bin Laden managed to do it. The book talks about the Delta Force commandos and other Special Forces elements that were on-scene and actively pursuing Bin Laden. Some of the stories are addictive and yet so frustrating. One example is how the U.S. forces were prevented from taking the lead in the hunt or even pursuing Bin Laden into Pakistan. Delta Force commandos actually had to hide from the press officials who were on the battlefield!The tactics and equipment used in the hunt, despite the author's attempt to obfuscate them, were interesting.This book is a wonderful way to get lost in the mountains of Tora Bora for a few hours. Dalton Fury's writing style is easy to read and follow. He doesn't thump his chest in patriotic pride or wrap himself in the flag when telling his stories like some authors. He just tells a story in layman's terms. No attempts to add excitement and inflate accomplishments. Just the facts. It's a great read.
