Thank you Mr. O'Reilly for another great book, enjoyed reading about President Reagan, I would recommend this as a required reading for any person interested in history.
I was an adult during President Reagan's term in office, and I clearly remember the challenges he - and the country - faced at the time. You could legitimately call me a Reagan fan, however I'm not a hard-core fan who is not able to withstand negative information about his life. I wanted that caveat noted since Mr. O'Reilly asserts on many occasions that readers who leave negative feedback are in that group.I began reading in interest, but it became evident early on that much of the information contained in the pages seemed to be merely gossip, and difficult and/or impossible to verify. Since then I have researched the material and found many errors regarding their "facts".In fact, in last night's reading of the "mail" on "The Factor" someone noted that the Reagan library will not carry the book as they assert it's not factual/historical (paraphrasing). Bill's answer, which he delivered with great passion, was that he and Mr. Dugard had requested memos from the library which have seemingly "magically" disappeared. It's due to this disagreement that the Reagan Library is not adding "Killing Reagan" to their inventory. If their source material was accurate and vetted, why would the authors be trying to find their source after the release of their book?In any case, I will finish the book since I've paid for it (hard copy), but I find it difficult since there is so much questionable material contained in its pages. I do, however, take some responsibility since I also bought "Legends and Lies" and read a comment on Amazon from an expert who was on the series stating her comments were edited and taken out of context. With that edit it appeared she was incorrect in her information. All I can say is that I'm a fan of President Reagan and was hopeful I would receive a well sourced biography of his life and presidency.As an example of a personal "fact" : while Mr. Reagan was in Hollywood he bedded an actress who states she was unable to obtain a climax, and he was so frustrated that he stated there was something wrong with *her*. Now, unless Mr. O'Reilly or Mr. Dugard were in the bedroom with the two parties, how can they state this as a fact of his life during his acting days. Yes, the actress may have stated this some time during her life, but this is hearsay and an "Enquirer" story. There is no place for this in a factual history book.Now that may seem a silly thing to bring up when there were so many assertions about his term in office, but it does give an example of the source material contained within the book's pages.
I read a lot of books – probably 40 to 50 a year, mostly history and biographies. This is the third biography I have read of Reagan and this is easily the worst of the three. I should point out that I am a fan of O’Reilly , and watch his show regularly. Killing Reagan was a big disappointment. It was a very superficial treatment of one of the most influential people of the twentieth century. I lived as a mature adult through the Reagan years, and have always been a political junkie. The book completely ignores Reagan’s infectious optimism and the effect that had on the country. It also has no mention of how the country rebounded from a terrible recession early in Reagan’s presidency. In my opinion, the book focuses way too much on such topics as John Hinckley both prior to and after his assassination attempt on Reagan. For example, Hinckley’s love life while in the treatment center is immaterial to the book. The book breezes by Reagan’s relationship with Gorbachev , which would have been enlightening. It was Reagan who initiated the downfall of the Soviet Union, which was one of the most important events of the twentieth century, and the fall of the USSR received very little treatment. O’Reilly has stated that the people who do not like his book seem to have wanted him to glorify Reagan, and that may be the case in some instances, but certainly not in mine. O’Reilly states that the book focuses on all that Reagan had to overcome in order to earn his place in history, and that statement leaves me wondering what in the world he is talking about. The book has no such focus. I read Killing Jesus, and that was a great book, but Killing Reagan was a waste of my time.
I enjoyed the first third of the book, but as the book progressed I began to feel uneasy about the reference to President Reagan and memory loss so early in his presidency. The authors made it sound like his brain was not functioning at 100% well before he made his greatest speech at the Berlin Wall late in his second term. I have read other reviews from well known historians and they agree the book is not completely factual. I would caution readers who read the book to do further research on President Reagan. I have read and enjoyed all of the previous book by Mr. O'Reilly but this one was disappointing.
Eventhough I am not an american citizen, I am a Reagan fan. This book points out many negative facts on him; I am OK with it, as nobody is perfect. But I am not OK with the many very positive issues that made President Reagan an outstanding one. For example, this book says not a single word about his very close relantionship with Pope John Paul II and the very valuable legacy it meant for the whole world. The book is OK, but not what I expected.
This is my least favorite of the "Killing" series. It is really good at times, but there is a lot of rumor and innuendo inserted to make Reagan look bad, incompetent, and bumbling. For example, the book declares Reagan has a low intellect based on school grades, then later discusses how brilliant Reagan was in making his case to the American people. Multiple times an accusation is made, yet even the authors admit the rumor was never proven.
