What a fantastic book! Just a great read in the most accessible style but providing genuine information that's hard to find elsewhere. Ms. Johnsen connects the dots! Academic specialists, being what they are, tend to look at topics with blinders on - they can't connect different cultures (even when the cultures were clearly in contact with each other) and they once they've got the idea that somebody like Thales or Plato is a scientist or a philosopher, they ignore any spiritual side the writer might have had - even when that was their main mission in life. Linda Johnsen does an outstanding job of bringing it all together as regards some of the main thinkers of Greek and Hellenistic antiquity, and she does so with a style that makes the book hard to lay down. Anyone interested in the Greek philosophical tradition, in spirituality, in cultural interconnection between Europe and points east should check out this endearing book!
I enjoyed the book, though I had a few criticisms. I sometimes felt although there were more apt comparisons, or comparisons missed, in relating these figures to Indian mysticism; I mainly just thought Buddhism occasionally was a better comparison point. That's all no big deal though, nothing that really bothered me. The main thing I had an issue with was that often times these figures, whom I have studied myself, weren't represented as fully as possible; the finer points of philosophy were often lost in exchange for telling stories about the individuals. I certainly enjoyed learning more about the lives of these individuals, but I felt they had so much to offer that went unmentioned. Regardless of my minor issues, this is the only book of its kind that is both enjoyable and accessible; for this reason I believe it deserved 5 stars.

This introductory book offers the reader a gateway to awakening our awareness of what we have lost and can regain by educating ourselves about the deep spiritual roots of our civilization and thus reconnect with our full potential. During these times especially, we are being called upon to renew our connection with the source of Western civilization and to draw spiritual nourishmeant from the essential practices that led to the birth of reason, law, medicine, and the sciences, the wonder of awareness of being itself, from which all the disciplines are born and develop. Read this book for your own benefit, share it with your friends and family, and embark together upon the amazing journey of becoming an initiate of our root philosophical tradition that is our birthright.
Guess where all those Greek and Roman Philosophers went to learn their craft? If you answered what are India, and Egypt, then you answered the Double Jeopardy question for the day. I hope you bet wisely. This book is very interesting. We should all be paying more attention to what Maharishi Mahesh Yogi had to say. Several thousand years of wisdom must have some credibility.
One can only be deeply grateful for books such as this one as one ponders the history of the ancients and their role in our collective evolution of spirituality. Linda presents an open minded journey through Western philosophical and spiritual thought and for meditators and spiritual practitioners, she beautifully ties together our common explorations of consciousness to what these ancient sages may have been expressing using the metaphor and language of their time. She also provides a great series of books for one to journey through on ones own if so inclined.
Wow, she highlights people that were not in my background studies as mystical thinkers and makes some observations about their personalities and experiences that shed light on the broader picture. I find it repeatedly amazing how supposed learned people can hone in on an idea and reject the context, then pass that on to the descending generations until it's context is very lost. It changes things. Moral lesson for me which I have been doing more in recent years, anyway is: "Don't be lazy; go to the original sources and learn if first hand for yourself." I plan to some of this after reading this book.
Husband can't sop reading it; many more ancient greek philosophers besides Socrates. Read about Western civilization roots from an author who knows and annotates her findings. Then those authors annotated can be read as you continue your journey. Know thy Self
Loved it because I have a friend that believes the Greeks from the time of Socrates were the wisest and best of any civilization. This demonstrated that their were other civilizations that that those that came before during and after had their own stars and contributed to the wisdom of Plato, Aristotle et.al.
