From School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up{amp}mdash;Lee's classic novel is presented in comics format, reintroducing spirited Scout; her older brother, Jem; and their father, Atticus, a lawyer who serves as the story's moral center. As the Great Depression lingers in the small town of Maycomb, AL, Scout and Jem soak up their last moments of childhood innocence with their friend Dill. Beginning with the children's fascination with Arthur "Boo" Radley, their mysterious neighbor, the trio's perspective guides readers through complex issues facing 1930s Southern society. As the summer ends, the gap between innocence and experience widens for Jem and Scout as racial and gender tensions clash and bleed into the world around them. Atticus defends Tom Robinson, a black man accused of raping a young white woman, and the case rapidly reveals the dark underbelly of this seemingly genteel community. Fordham deftly interprets Lee's narrative with austere artwork. His palette is muted, but the frames pack a punch with panoramic views and revealing close-ups. A note at the end explains the adaptation's use of the n-word: "The inclusion of the word{amp}mdash;its dehumanizing power and the ease with which it was used{amp}mdash;is central to understanding the themes of the novel." VERDICT The work's examination of topics such as the failure of the justice system will resonate with readers, especially those studying the source material.{amp}mdash;Elise Martinez, Zion-Benton Public Library, IL

Review
“This gorgeously rendered graphic-novel version provides a new perspective for old fans but also acts as an immersive introduction for youngsters as well as any adult who somehow missed out on the iconic story set in Maycomb, Alabama.” (USA Today)“This thoughtfully crafted interpretation of Lee’s classic reintroduces readers to the Finch family.. Fordham visually establishes the world of Maycomb County—with all its unspoken laws pertaining to race, class, and family—with a sure hand.” (Publishers Weekly)“Like Lee’s spare novel, Fordham’s graphic adaptation leaves us to ponder what is unsaid, what is unseen, what lies in the subtext. A moving new take on a familiar story.” (Booklist)“The economic and racial disparities, the blinders that “civilized” society stubbornly clings to, the realization that justice for all can never exist without equality for all—these are vividly portrayed not only via Lee’s words but also by Fordham’s art, making this graphic adaptation of To Kill a Mockingbird a worthy partner to the original, providing a clarion call for civility, equality, and justice for all.” (New York Journal of Books)

Shipped promptly and arrived quickly. No issues there.Keeps almost all of the original words of Harper Lee's story- so teachers will have same issues with language to explain to their students. Fordham also has a short afterword to explain why he kept the same language as Lee used in her original text too.I'm glad I bought this, because only after reading it, I realized that I really don't need the pictures to support the text- I believe Lee's words are better read without the pictures eclipsing the reader's imagination. I have taught 8th grade ELA for 12 years, and I can certainly appreciate what Fordham has done, and his love for Lee's writing is expressed through his artwork. Since no one else has produced a TKaM graphic novel such as this before, I wanted to share it with my students. It has 9 frames per page, and it's pretty busy to keep track of, plus it's 273 pages long. But his care with each picture and what it should convey to readers is evident too. He does NOT have the final scene where Scout stands on Boo's porch imagining what his life was like from his window/PoV (as the old movie does not either). To me, that is one of the most important and poignant points of Scout's development and so I was a bit disappointed Fordham left that kind of imagery out of his version. However, after reading it, I'm still glad I have it for my library, but I don't think I need it for teaching lessons on empathy, imagery and figurative language at all. The original does that far better, in my opinion.
I have A.D.D. and have never been able to concentrate long enough to read any books in my lifetime. I thought in this format I would give it a try. All the illustrations enabled me to stay interested and focused. I can't believe I read a 260 page book in a few nights. I will look for more illustrare books now.
This graphic novel did an excellent job to the actual novel! To Kill A Mockingbird is one of my favorite books and I was pleasantly surprised with this graphic novel!!I recommend to all lovers to the original book!Happy Reading!Mel 🖤ðŸ¶ðŸºðŸ¾
I bought it for my son to help him grasp a visual on the different characters. He struggles with remembering who is who in a story without a visual face. They are reading it in school. Kind of hard to follow in some parts of the story, a little vague. It was edited by someone who knew story line. I feel there is missing info from “scene†to “sceneâ€. It still helped him connect. Chapters aren’t labeled either. Good drawings
I got this as a gift for my son who prefers to read graphic novel format books. When my daughter found out, she's very angry with me because this is her favorite book and she owns multiple copies of the regular version. Now she is demanding that I get her one of these as well. We are very happy with it
I am using this in my 8th grade ENL class as we are reading it In the English classroom. It’s great with most of the actual dialogue. One thing I don’t like is the chapters aren’t divided up. Otherwise, it’s great.
This is a great adaptation of the book published as a graphic novel. Recommended.
Great. Graphic version matches up well with novel.
