This review applies to the Kindle edition.Overall, this was a helpful tool for practicing for the exam. Unfortunately, the Kindle edition had a number of errors in it, which made this less useful as a tool. For example, one of the practice questions states the following - and I quote -"When the normally (1) ______ film director was interviewed, it was only the her flow of words. Her (3) on topic of her next movie that (2) _____ that subject suggested it was an unwelcome one." Good luck filling in those blanks. In another place, where C was clearly the correct answer, the answer key listed the correct answer as 'B,' but in the explanation it stated that 'A, B, D, and E' can be ruled out. There are two problems with this. First, there really aren't that many questions in this book: every question that is broken takes away from the value of the book. Secondly, if you're trying to practice for the exam, training yourself to second-guess the exam questions ("Is this supposed to say...?") is counter-productive.I got some use out of this, but just a quick review of the Kindle edition by someone at ETS could have made this more useful.
Me: long-term GRE tutor. You: probably someone studying for the test. I hope this review convinces you to buy not only this book, but also to buy the Official Guide (if you don't already own it) and the Verbal Reasoning practice book (both published by ETS). Why? Because I believe these books will all definitely add points to your score. Even if we never work together, I hope you do well. This math book is invaluable for one major reason: there are 150 real GRE questions inside of it. Real questions! Why am I so worked up about them? Well, ETS has been stingy so far in providing GRE practice material. Now, I and you have more ways to get used to the real test. Careful analysis of and practice with these questions helps, and I'll be using them with all my GRE students. This book also includes strategies that ETS hasn't published before - and it tells you which questions the strategies work on. This is great and unprecedented. For more complete technique, you'll probably want to check out the Manhattan Prep math guides.Sidebar: hey, Vince - don't other companies publish GRE practice problems? Yes, they do - but they're pretty much worthless compared to the real thing. Even Manhattan Prep (which I like a lot) doesn't really write realistic math questions (and definitely not verbal questions). Don't even get me started on Kaplan...So, I urge you to practice with and analyze these authentic questions. Carefully reviewing the concepts tested and figuring out what techniques work best will make you much better at quantitative reasoning if you invest the time.
Hello, GRE studier. I'm a long-time GRE tutor. I'm probably more excited about this book than you ever will be, but I hope I can convince you to buy it. I enjoy helping people get good information about the test, especially since there is so much bad information out there. Why is this book essential? So far, ETS has only published four practice tests worth of GRE material, along with a smattering of practice problems. With a limited sample, we can make many conclusions about the real test - but it's always good to get more data. And here it finally is.Careful analysis of these questions will help a lot if you take the time to dissect them and think about what they're testing and how exactly they're written. You could practice with 3rd party material like Kaplan's, but neither Kaplan (nor its competitors) will be writing the GRE you take. ETS will. ETS questions are subtly but significantly different than those from ANY 3rd party. The technique ETS provides is not the best - you can probably find much better technique in Manhattan Prep's guides. But ETS questions are what you want to be using to study. This book also includes 2 new prompts for each of the AWA tasks and sample essays for each with commentary. This is worth the price of the book, since it gives us a lot of new data about what the graders reward.Overall, this is a must buy if you're serious about your GRE score.
This is absolutely the best resource you can buy for the GRE (along with the quantitative reasoning companion book). The questions are written by the same people as those who write the test so the level is perfect. There are explanations and the format makes it very easy to use. I used these books in conjunction with a few free apps like magoosh vocabulary builder and I did decently well (163 on both). I worked through all questions in both books over a period of 3 weeks or so.
I actually found the Manhattan Prep "5lb practice book" more useful than this (it's actually 6lbs) http://www.amazon.com/lb-Book-GRE-Practice-Problems/dp/1937707296/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1434971682&sr=1-1&keywords=manhattan+prep+5lb. There were many more practice math problems in that book. This books questions also seemed easier than what actually showed up on my test. Overall, good book and more practice solving GRE math problems never hurts, but if you want a book with just a ton of problems to practice of varying levels the Manhattan prep book was more useful for me.
I appreciate the practice questions and the following explanations for each of them. I also like how the book doesn't give you the detailed explanations in the answers so I'm forced to figure out the steps they skipped in order to get the correct answer. I think that's a great way of studying for the GRE because you're more inclined to remember what you studied/learned. This is not to say this is the end all and be all for studying the quantitative section of the GRE, I would definitely recommend adding other study books in your arsenal. But, for a general brush up on math, this is a good book.
