this a poetry collection in different themes or sections, many recognisable both from other poetry collections and from life itself.one of them had to do with hurt and abandonment, and abandonment is something i don't recognise as much but i could feel it in this book and know it will resonate with people.the empowerment part was absolutely fantastic.//woman.it took time before i realisedthe title is synonymouswith warrior//i liked the formatting and the little leaf. it also felt very solidary with women in general and power to this (and us) which i really appreciated. and the fact that it was queer! i like poetry books that have poems about love that are queer, both explicit and not (heads up for vague implications of sex).//i survivedthat is the victoryof this storyi still breathemy heart still beatsi survivedand that is more than enough//if the book had been in a format accessible for my phone, i would have so many highlighted pieces. like A LOT. which brings me to another observation. it had many great lines, but in comparison, there were less poems i liked that much as a whole. maybe the things i could or wanted to take away always just fit in two lines? sometimes i thought the extra lines made it worse, or lost me because of the lack of flow. sometimes they felt unnecessary or just didn't touch me personally. sometimes the words felt too big?so likei'm not going to take away many poems, but i am going to take away many pieces, and i can't wait to write those down and think about them and let them inspire me//i do not owe obedience to traditionat the sacrifice of my happiness//some hesitations:it was good to read a piece in which the author says good things came from her mental struggles, how it made her grow. i'm grateful that's her experience and i'm happy for her. i just also always think it's a little bit dangerous, especially with a title "none but ourselves can free our minds"the phrase "Make me believe im the only one these hands have touched" feels slightly.. slut-shamy? it's not that i don't get where it is coming from but who cares that other people have already had the opportunity and love to be touched?and "contents beneath our clothing" in regards to a poem about sexual orientation gives the implication that gender is what you look like naked?and as last one: "fear is a curable disease"? is it though?? i mean yes, and i get this poem and the message it tries to give, but it sounds a little oversimplified and that seemed to be the case on multiple occasions (though a few pieces felt spot on)//an empty aching well of lonelinessi am a hollow vessel//so to summarise: for me, many great little bits, and maybe you will like what i thought were more "filler" lines and have an even more overall enjoying experience (poetry is such a deeply personal thing). it has some amazing pieces, just be mindful it can have some hurtful phrases.

Some poetry collections you can breeze through in a short time, while other are a slow burn. Wild Flowers is a perfect example of a collection that you need to read at a slow pace to absorb completely. It's a powerful collection of poems. Each poem will grab you by the heart and squeeze. You will be completely engrossed while your soul collects each word that has been carefully crafted. Wild Flowers might be my favorite collection of poetry that I've ever read. Every page spoke to me, every word held me captive and more than once I had to swipe away a tear.

Sometimes a good book of poetry is all that you need. As I have gotten older and have really got into reading as a serious hobby, there have been multiple instances where I have just wanted to drink some hot tea, each something comforting, and read poetry that has a similar relaxing and comforting effect. I have read many different types and forms of poetry over the years, but my favorite is the free-verse style that doesn't concentrate on form or syllables or rhyming. Rather, its focus is on delivering a message and a feeling. When those moods hit, a poetry collection like Wild Flowers is the answer.  Wild Flowers is divided into five sections --loss, pain and depression; abandonment; love and sexuality; empowerment; healing-- which each contain a smaller collection of poetry covering those subjects. The poems in this collection cover a plethora of tighter topics including love--specifically queer love--, loss of family, manipulation, cancer, grief, depression, guilt, self-care, and women. What I loved most about this collection is that each piece is a delicate and intricate snippet of real, raw life and the emotions and turmoil we deal with on an every-day, every-month, every-year basis. The poems in this collection realize and allow the reader to recognize that we all deal with the same things, maybe on the same levels. No one has a perfect life or a perfect family. There are times when everyone feels depressed or left out or gets hurt by someone they loved. Sometimes it is beneficial, and a crucial step to healing, to read poetry like Michelle Smith's to identify those things in our own lives. For me, poetry is "good" or "well-done" if I can connect to it in some way. There were so many points in this collection where I had to stop and make a note of a quote or idea that resonated with me. The thing that I enjoy more is that poetry collections like this are fluid and dynamic; they will move and adapt to fit the reader. It is almost as if the poetry, the words and thoughts, and feelings of Michelle Smith, have a life of their own and rise to meet the reader wherever they may be on their own journey. For me, that is powerful poetry.  There were seriously so many pieces that struck me when I read it for the first time. As a form of self-care and reflection, I use poetry to see where my mind is at the moment. It is easier to see the negative in our lives if we are observing something that isn't ourselves. For me, there was a poem about learning to deal with and grieve while trying to remember the joy of a loved one we have lost. I dealt with trying to be happy and remember the good times while juggling grief at the same time and reading someone else having that problem and voicing it made me think about this and my own problems in this area recently. Along with this, I was attracted to poems about manipulation, being lied to, abandonment, and depression. 2018 was a hard year for me that was filled with these same topics. Being able to read about these things on a page that isn't my life and relationships was a much-needed refresh and reminder of what I have been through and where I am headed.    One readily apparent aspect of this collection of poetry that I ADORED is the proliferation of women, motherhood, and feminity that is sprinkled all throughout. It is almost as if some of the poems in this collection directly draw from the idea of the strength and wisdom of women today and our ancestors. I think that coming into your own, especially if you identify as a woman or as a feminine energy, means that you remember and connect with those who came before us and set the stage for where we stand today. Women are powerful and beautiful and feared; as Smith says in this collection, "the title [of woman] is synonymous with warrior." Thank you thank you Michelle Smith for collecting those thoughts and words in this collection and creating a way to reconnect!Overall, I would give this collection 4.5 stars, maybe even closer to five. I enjoyed reading the poetry in this collection and allowing myself time to think about the subjects and connect to things that I have felt or are currently feeling. Poetry is such a strong tool for personal introspection and change, especially when poetry covers such a vast and important collection of topics just as this collection does. Michelle Smith's poetry inspires and creates turmoil in thoughts all the while serving as a salve to problems we may face. I appreciate that she has taken the time to put words to such problems and pen a collection that not only gives a narrative to those negative aspects of life but serves as a way to recognize and maybe change the way we think.Â

In the last six months or so I have discovered a new love for poetry. To say I was excited when Ms. Smith reached out to me with the opportunity to read Wild Flowers would be an understatement. If you enjoy works such as Rupi Kaur's Milk and Honey or The Sun and Her Flowers, you will enjoy Wild Flowers. As I read, I took screenshots and saved lines that spoke to me deeply. I'd love to share some of those with you now.I found myself craving more and could not believe I had reached the end quite as quickly as I did. Wild Flowers is next to impossible to put down. It is a quick, but extremely emotional, read. I recommend to anyone looking for their next poetic read.
