After space stuff and ocean animals I figure one of the next hottest science topics for younger readers is volcanoes. (Just check out your local middle grade science fair.) But, it's pretty easy to find superficial, pooring organized, or just dopey volcano books. Not so here. This is a thorough, informative and entertaining effort with a lot of well-organized info and high end graphics and photo work.DK has taken a very nice approach to their science and nature books for the 7 to 10, (or so), crowd. The books feature well thought out graphics, informative rather than just pretty photos, and content heavy graphs and charts. With volcanoes it's possible to just to wander around aimlessly, but here the chapter and topic organization is logical and leads the reader through the subject. There is a running overarching narrative, but it is broken up, or supplemented, by lots of factoids, sidebars, and mini-digressions tucked away throughout the graphics.I have noted before with regard to a number of DK books that I especially appreciate their decision to avoid dopey jokes and puns, or the "Dummies" type stuff that is often a distraction and can be very condescending. "Gee Whiz!" and "Wow!" bits are fine, but the DK authors generally play it upbeat and straight. A younger kid reading this deserves that consideration.Here, we start with a basic description of volcanoes, an Earth cross-section, and an explanation of plate tectonics. We go through the different types of volcanoes, aided by a number of excellent photos of different sorts of volcanoes. We then move on to special topics, including types of lava and lave rock, deadly eruptions, myths and legends around volcanoes, geysers and hot springs, deep sea vents and even volcanoes on other planets. Finally, we look at the work of volcanologists and look at the tools of their trade. As I say, the overall treatment is fairly thorough and provides a solid, basic grounding.So, this isn't terribly advanced, but it isn't superficial or childish either. It's good, solid, reliable and current info intended to serve as a basic introduction and maybe encouragement for further reading.
